ANZAC Day 2009 - War Memorial at Dee Why RSL
posted: Monday, 27th April 2009 - 12:41 • category: National
On April 25, 1915, the members of the newly formed Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or the ANZACS, landed at Gallipoli as part of a wider, British-led campaign to take control of the peninsula from the defending Ottoman soldiers so the navy could capture the Dardanelles, which they had failed to do earlier that year. After nearly nine months and half a million casualties, the ANZACs and the rest of the Allied campaign evacuated the peninsula, defeated by the Ottomans.
Each year a sunrise service is held around Australia and New Zealand to commemorate the ANZACs.
This years dawn service at Dee Why RSL was from 6.15am at the Club’s War Memorial All interested parties were welcome to attend.
Many people, with large numbers of them in their 20s and 30s attended what was an outstanding service
